That afternoon, when I met Niall, there was an original ceramic plate by
Picasso up for an online auction. Niall Fairhead, an art dealer in London for over 30 years, was looking forward to bidding, he told me. \u201cIt shows a dove \u2013 a symbol of peace – a very nice piece with a great history\u201d, Niall explains. \u201cPicasso was involved in the peace movement. He was a superstar of his time so his voice was listened to.\u201d Niall knows quite a bit about the artist, because Picassos form a large part of his art collection.<\/p>

We meet for coffee and biscuits in the city. The interiors of the Private Members\u2019 Art Club in Dover Street, where Niall had invited me to, are quite something. Unfortunately, I wasn`t allowed to take any photos inside but never mind, we found a lovely spot later outside. But anyway, back to Niall: \u201cMost art dealers sell on commission; I buy and sell\u201d, he tells me. He spends a few hours at online auctions almost daily. After 30 years of trading art, he owns a large stock of art – between 300 and 400 pieces worth about a million pounds. “Most of it is currently with dealers or on display at shows all over the world\u201d, Niall says.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gloom in the industry<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cI`ve got three portfolios\u201d, Niall explains. \u201cThe School of Paris, for example Matisse or Picasso, American Pop such as Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein and others, and the Modern British like Banksy or David Hockney. A lot of them are signed limited prints which are more affordable and only cost a few thousand pounds, as well as ceramics. However, I noticed that those works of art that cost around 20.000 pounds sell easier than the ones that go for 5000. Because those who spend 20.000 are not worried about their electric bill, those others are. \u201c<\/p>

For the last couple of years, he has experienced a fall in sales because of recent developments in politics and our economy: People who used to be moderately wealthy are finding themselves struggling to maintain a comfortable standard of living. “There is a gloom in the industry; the luxury sector has been severely hit. Sales are half of what they were just three years ago.” Contemporary artists have taken the biggest blow, he says. “The value of contemporary art has gone down because investors play it safe and buy well-known names.”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Thanks to his experience and a good sense of what`s in fashion his business which he leads together with his wife is still going strong. “I’m now mainly looking for private buyers as clients; people who lack the expertise need an art dealer to hold their hand when they buy art.” Works of art can go considerably up and down in value depending on what`s in fashion, Niall explains.<\/p>

\u201cThere are price bubbles \u2013 an example is Banksy: his art went up and up in price, and then it dropped. What`s in fashion is as important as the history of a piece of art and if you buy art for investment you have to know what`s currently popular.\u201d Niall has observed a growing number of art advisors who promise to build a collection for private buyers and charge a percentage of what they buy for their clients. \u201cBut a lot of them are unethical and have in fact very little knowledge of what they are doing\u201d, warns Niall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Humour and Storytelling<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Personally, Niall loves art that has a sense of humour or has a message. Like the Picasso dove plate he is looking at buying. \u201cThis kind of art usually sells better as well\u201d, he says. \u201cA lady once walked up to me and told me how boring my Picasso was. I explained the story behind the picture and it turns out that it didn`t bore her at all but in fact she bought the picture. That`s what art does: It projects an emotion, a concept.\u201d<\/p>

And there we have it again: Storytelling is what people are drawn to. Messages, stories that make them feel something, that don`t bore. What`s true for art is true for commercial photography as well (which is also a form of art): The more story it contains, the more emotion it evokes the more successful it is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Heute Nachmittag wird ein Teller von Picasso online versteigert. Niall Fairhead, seit \u00fcber 30 Jahren Kunsth\u00e4ndler in London, freut sich auf die Auktion, wie er mir erz\u00e4hlt. \u201eAuf dem Teller ist eine Taube abgebildet \u2013 ein Symbol f\u00fcr Frieden \u2013 ein sehr sch\u00f6nes St\u00fcck mit einer gro\u00dfartigen Geschichte\u201c, erkl\u00e4rt Niall. \u201ePicasso engagierte sich in der Friedensbewegung. Er war ein Superstar seiner Zeit, daher wurde auf seine Stimme geh\u00f6rt.\u201c Niall wei\u00df einiges \u00fcber den K\u00fcnstler, denn Picassos machen einen gro\u00dfen Teil seiner Kunstsammlung aus.<\/p>

Wir treffen uns in der Stadt auf Kaffee und Kekse. Die Innenr\u00e4ume des Private Members’ Art Club in der Dover Street, in den Niall mich eingeladen hat, sind beeindruckend. Leider durfte ich drinnen keine Fotos machen, aber das macht nichts, wir haben sp\u00e4ter auch drau\u00dfen einen sch\u00f6nen Platz gefunden. Aber zur\u00fcck zu Niall: \u201eDie meisten Kunsth\u00e4ndler verkaufen auf Provisionsbasis, ich kaufe und verkaufe\u201c, erz\u00e4hlt er mir. Er verbringt fast t\u00e4glich einige Stunden mit Online-Auktionen. Nach 30 Jahren im Kunsthandel besitzt er einen gro\u00dfen Bestand an Kunstwerken \u2013 zwischen 300 und 400 St\u00fccke im Wert von etwa einer Million Pfund. \u201eDas meiste davon befindet sich derzeit bei H\u00e4ndlern oder wird auf Ausstellungen auf der ganzen Welt gezeigt\u201c, sagt Niall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201eIch habe drei Portfolios\u201c, erkl\u00e4rt Niall. \u201eDie Schule von Paris mit beispielsweise Matisse oder Picasso, amerikanische Pop-Art wie Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein und andere, und moderne britische K\u00fcnstler wie Banksy oder David Hockney. Viele davon sind signierte limitierte Drucke, die erschwinglicher sind und nur ein paar tausend Pfund kosten, sowie Keramiken. Ich habe jedoch festgestellt, dass sich Kunstwerke, die etwa 20.000 Pfund kosten, leichter verkaufen lassen als solche, die 5000 Pfund kosten. Denn diejenigen, die 20.000 Pfund ausgeben, machen sich keine Sorgen um ihre Stromrechnung, die anderen hingegen schon.\u201c<\/p>

In den letzten Jahren musste Niall aufgrund der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen einen Umsatzr\u00fcckgang hinnehmen: Menschen, die fr\u00fcher \u00fcber ein mittleres Verm\u00f6gen verf\u00fcgten, haben nun Schwierigkeiten, ihren gewohnten Lebensstandard aufrechtzuerhalten. \u201eDie Branche ist momentan in einer d\u00fcsteren Stimmung; der Luxussektor wurde schwer getroffen. Die Ums\u00e4tze sind nur noch halb so hoch wie noch vor drei Jahren.\u201c Zeitgen\u00f6ssische K\u00fcnstler seien am st\u00e4rksten betroffen, sagt er. \u201eDer Wert zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Kunst ist gesunken, weil Investoren auf Nummer sicher gehen und bekannte Namen kaufen.\u201c<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dank seiner Erfahrung und seinem guten Gesp\u00fcr f\u00fcr Mode l\u00e4uft das Gesch\u00e4ft, das er gemeinsam mit seiner Frau f\u00fchrt, nach wie vor gut. \u201eIch suche jetzt haupts\u00e4chlich private K\u00e4ufer als Kunden; Menschen, denen das Fachwissen fehlt, brauchen einen Kunsth\u00e4ndler, der ihnen beim Kauf von Kunst zur Seite steht.\u201c Kunstwerke k\u00f6nnen je nach Trends erhebliche Wertschwankungen erfahren, erkl\u00e4rt Niall.<\/p>

\u201eEs gibt Preisblasen \u2013 ein Beispiel daf\u00fcr ist Banksy: Der Preis f\u00fcr seine Kunstwerke stieg und stieg und fiel dann wieder rasant. Was gerade in Mode ist, ist genauso wichtig wie die Geschichte eines Kunstwerks, und wenn man Kunst als Investition kauft, muss man wissen, was derzeit beliebt ist.\u201c Niall hat beobachtet, dass es immer mehr Kunstberater gibt, die versprechen, eine Sammlung f\u00fcr private K\u00e4ufer aufzubauen, und daf\u00fcr einen Prozentsatz des Kaufpreises von ihren Kunden verlangen. \u201eAber viele von ihnen sind gewissenlos und haben in Wirklichkeit nur sehr wenig Ahnung von dem, was sie tun\u201c, warnt Niall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Pers\u00f6nlich liebt Niall Kunst, die Humor hat oder eine Botschaft tr\u00e4gt. Wie der Picasso-Taubenteller, die er kaufen m\u00f6chte. \u201eDiese Art von Kunst verkauft sich in der Regel auch besser\u201c, sagt er. \u201eEinmal kam eine Dame auf mich zu und sagte mir, wie langweilig sie meinen Picasso finde. Ich erkl\u00e4rte ihr die Geschichte hinter dem Bild, und auf einmal war sie \u00fcberhaupt nicht mehr gelangweilt, sondern sie kaufte das Bild sogar. Das ist es, was Kunst ausmacht: Sie vermittelt eine Emotion, ein Konzept.\u201c<\/p>

Und da haben wir es wieder: Menschen f\u00fchlen sich von Geschichten angezogen. Botschaften, Stories, die uns etwas f\u00fchlen lassen, die nicht gleichg\u00fcltig sind. Was f\u00fcr die Kunst gilt, gilt auch f\u00fcr die kommerzielle Fotografie (die ja auch eine Form der Kunst ist): Je mehr Storytelling sie enth\u00e4lt, desto mehr Emotionen weckt sie und desto erfolgreicher ist sie.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
