In conversation with Jenni Davis, Director Consultant of Business Networking International (BNI) groups in London
Jenni Davis is a partner at the accounting firm Calder & Co and also a Director Consultant for several Business Networking International (BNI) groups in London. If anyone knows about successful and enjoyable networking, it’s Jenni. So, I took the opportunity to ask her a couple of questions about it.
Jenni, for most business owners, networking is pretty important. However, imagine you’re an introvert and find networking events exhausting. How can you take good care of yourself and your energy levels when attending a networking event?
To begin with, turn up looking smart and well-dressed. This gives you confidence, which makes a big difference. Maintain an open posture — don’t cross your arms, as that can make you appear defensive or unapproachable.
Look for open groups: these are groups where people aren’t standing face-to-face but slightly angled, leaving a space that invites others to join in. This kind of body language signals that you’re welcome. Learn to read these cues.
Also, show genuine interest in people. I used to avoid asking questions because I worried people might think I was being nosy. But usually, that’s not the case — most people appreciate being asked about themselves. If you’re unsure, you can start with something like, “I hope you don’t mind me asking…” which gives them an easy way out if they prefer not to answer.
If someone responds only with short “yes” or “no” answers, that’s a sign they may be uncomfortable. But remember — people generally enjoy talking about themselves, so don’t be afraid to ask.
How can you start a conversation if you can’t think of anything or can`t find any common ground?
A simple and effective way to open a conversation is to ask, “How was your journey?” If they’re comfortable, they might tell you where they came from, which gives you more to talk about. From there, depending on how they respond, you can naturally guide the conversation in either a more personal direction or a work-focused one — and they can do the same.
