Why Protecting Energy Beats FOMO
Saying no to a "great opportunity"
Said no to something that sounded like an opportunity but felt like a trap. I wouldn’t have thought that I would have that in me.
In fact, once I made the choice, it wasn’t even that hard. I felt under pressure, and I absolutely hate feeling pressured—if I see a way out, I will take it. But it didn’t stop there. I went on to cancel two more commitments – ongoing contracts – that I normally would have renewed simply out of niceness or the fear of disappointing someone and letting someone down.
And I have to say: On more than one occasion afterward, I found myself thinking: I am so glad I got myself out of this.
Overcoming FOMO and the trap of people-pleasing
Of course, there is always that little doubting inner voice telling me that I might miss out on something in the long run. But a little bit of FOMO (the “fear of missing out”) is far less destructive than chronic overwhelm.
As a creative running a photography business, energy management is something I constantly have to keep at the forefront of my mind. Moving away from people-pleasing and toward making decisions that actually serve my well-being is a habit I am actively practicing and intending to keep.

Studio moments & autumn light
On a lighter note: the light in my studio in Metzingen has been especially beautiful lately. I also saw some lovely looking yellow fruit that reminds me of art – I can’t remember their name, but they look very pretty in a picture, but they taste rather sour!
Over to you
How do you handle tough decision-making when other people’s expectations are involved? Do you find it easy to set boundaries, or are you still working on unlearning people-pleasing?
