A lot has been said and written about not giving up. That shows just how important it is. The other day, I`ve watched a video about the photographer Joel Grimes and what he said was: The big majority of all photography graduates don`t actually work as photographers, because they have given up too early. Talent is nice, but what really makes a person successful, is refusing to give up despite setbacks. Success means coming back over and over again.

Keep the faith up

My mum is a songwriter and has just published her first CD after years and years of trying to find the right people for the project. She`s heard a lot of “No”s on the way. And I would imagine that it hurt because the more personal the project is and the more passion you put into it, the more it hurts when it`s being rejected. However, she didn`t allow these “No”s to steal her joy and faith in what she was doing. Instead, she kept on trying and just did not give up – and eventually, it finally happened – the album is out: www.dorothewilmanns.de. “When disappointed, get reappointed”, says the famous preacher Joyce Meyer. The challenge is to keep the faith up, that something good will come up eventually.

The Challenge: The more rejections, the more we have tried.

I tended to be a quitter because I get discouraged easily if I`m not careful. Plus, I often take rejection personal. But I do want to challenge myself to get right back on track over and over again. I just remembered a true story that my former coach Hans Schumann has told me: A teacher (I think it was a sales teacher) gave his students the task to get as many rejections as possible in one week – the one with the most rejections would win.

His point was: Setbacks and rejections are normal and hearing many “No”s just means that we have tried a lot. Seeing it as a challenge, almost kind of a sport, might help us to get right back out and ask again. By getting used to this habit, we might not even dread the “No”s so much anymore. Instead, we might pat ourselves on the shoulder and say: “Well done, tried again – off to the next one.”

Meine Mutter ist Songwriterin und hat gerade ihre erste CD veröffentlicht – nachdem sie viele Jahre lang nach den richtigen Leuten für das Projekt gesucht hat und dabei viele „Neins“ einstecken musste. Und ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das hart war. Denn je persönlicher ein Projekt ist und je mehr Begeisterung man reinsteckt, desto mehr trifft es einen, wenn es auf Ablehnung stößt. Aber sie hat sich die Freude nicht nehmen und sich nicht entmutigen lassen, sondern hat immer weitergemacht und nicht aufgegeben – und jetzt hat es geklappt, die CD ist da – www.dorothewilmanns.de. “When disappointed, get reappointed”, sagt die bekannte Predigerin Joyce Meyer, was so viel heißt wie: Wenn du enttäuscht bist, mach direkt einen neuen Plan. Die Herausforderung ist, weiter fest daran zu glauben, dass gute Dinge auf uns warten.

Wenn wir viele Absagen bekommen, heißt das, dass wir viel versucht haben.

Ich tendiere dazu, zu schnell aufzugeben, weil ich mich leicht entmutigen lasse, wenn ich nicht aufpasse. Und ich nehme „Neins“ oft persönlich. Aber ich will mich selbst dazu herausfordern, mich nicht beirren zu lassen und einfach immer wieder weiterzumachen. Gerade ist mir noch was eingefallen, das mir mein ehemaliger Coach Hans Schumann erzählt hat: Ein Lehrer, der Vertreter ausgebildet hat, hat seinen Schülern die Aufgabe gegeben in einer Woche so viele „Neins“ wie möglich zu sammeln – der, der die meisten hat, gewinnt.

Was er damit sagen wollte: Rückschläge und Absagen sind ganz normal. Und wenn wir viele davon bekommen, dann heißt das nur, dass wir viel versucht haben. Wenn wir es als Herausforderung sehen, oder fast schon als eine Art Sport, dann könnte uns das helfen, gleich wieder weiterzumachen und weiter zu fragen. Durch dieses “Training” macht es uns vielleicht bald auch nicht mehr viel aus, „Neins“ zu hören. Stattdessen könnten wir uns auf die Schulter klopfen und uns loben. „Sehr gut gemacht, wieder was versucht – und auf zum Nächsten.“

5 steps to super-resilience

As creatives and as humans, we need to overcome a lot of problems on our journey towards our big dreams and goals. I think it`s great to dream big and have adventurous goals but in order to get there, we must not get discouraged by the obstacles on the way. For an article about how to become more resilient, I have interviewed two specialist resilience coaches, Monica Fiel and Ursula Walther. Resilience means not just overcoming difficulties but becoming better as a person by doing so. Turning a minus into a plus. So here I wanna share with you what I`ve learned and suggest 5 practical tips for more resilience:

1. Accept...

Unfortunately, the first point is the most difficult – well at least I find it the most difficult. In professional matters it`s kind of ok for me, to accept an unpleasant situation, but when it comes to private matters: super difficult. Even though it makes so much sense: Being annoyed doesn`t help at all. It just takes our energy and kills our nerves. And most of all: If the head is occupied with being annoyed and worried, how can it focus on a solution? Monica Fiel says, even super resilient people can`t always see the bright side straight away either. But “after the first shock, they say: ‘Well, it is what it is.’ And: “Could there be a chance for change?’ So it`s not so much about never ever being annoyed at all! But it`s more about limiting the time spent with annoying to the very minimum. And then accept the situation asap. What helps me there a bit, is trusting God and thinking, that everything happens for a reason, even though I might not see it at the very moment.

2. Focus on the solution

(not the problem)

Instead of spending our time thinking how annoyed we are, or – very unproductive – looking for people to blame, we`d rather distract our mind by asking ourselves: What can I actually DO? Here is an exercise that Monica Fiel suggests: Note everything about your problem, that you cannot change, and circle it. In another circle write everything down, that you can influence. What are the aspects, that you can actually change or influence? What are you focussing on? Where are you investing energy? Perhaps we can’t find THE solution straight away, but as long as you look out for possibilities and options, we should be on the right track. And we don`t obsess over the problem (Everything goes wrong) but the solution (What can I do, that things work out better?). Besides: It’s best to do that before your anger or worry has had a chance to build itself up sky-high…

3. Praise yourself

Coaches generally recommend remembering your successes. Obviously to realize: I’ve overcome so much already, so I’m gonna make this, too. Personally, I tend to remember all the shit that happened, rather than the successes. Therefore the coaches recommend making a note of every success of the day each night before sleeping. Not only is this supposed to help us remember, but we would also pay more attention to our successes (because we wanna make a note in our book later..) And the more we start to see and focus on our successes the more successful we feel and (therefore) the more success we will attract and so on.

4. Ask for help

We don`t have to manage everything on our own. “Resilient people know their boundaries and they know, in what areas they need help”, said Ursula Walther in the interview. And resilient people aren`t shy to ask for help either! I think friends and a network are soo important, as well because we simply feel stronger and better knowing that there are people having our back.

5. Look after yourself

“How will I have energy for challenges, when I eat crap, don`t relax, and don`t sleep enough?”, says Ursula Walter. Makes sense, of course, but we tend to forget.  Some sports, a little yoga, or whatever makes you feel good, happy moments – they’re not just pleasures, they make us more resilient, too.

So that was the 5-step-strategy to be invincible. To me, listing the five for this post was actually quite helpful. Because I know these days all too well: Nothing works out as it should. I remember being an employee can be so tough at times, especially when having difficult managers. But as a freelancer, it`s not all easy-peasy either: as I have to connect with people all the time to get to new jobs, I hear a lot of “Nos” – or actually most of the time I don`t hear anything back at all. So there`s always something in life, that sucks, isn`t it? ; )  I`ll definitely try and apply the steps above.

Widerstandskraft in 5 Schritten

(Oder: Wie man sich nicht unterkriegen lässt)

Als Kreative und als Menschen müssen wir auf dem Weg zu unseren großen Traeumen und Zielen viele Probleme überwinden. Ich finde es super, große zu trauemen und abenteuerliche Ziele zu haben, aber um sie tatsaechlich zu erreichen, dürfen wir uns nicht von den Hindernissen auf dem Weg dahin entmutigen lassen. Für einen Magazin-Beitrag habe ich zwei „Resilienz-Trainer“, Monica Fiel und Ursula Walther, interviewt. (Den Artikel gibt´s übrigens hier: www.geamagazines.reader.e-pages.pub/geamagazines/97/20 ) 

Resilient sein, heißt: Krisen nicht nur gut zu überstehen, sondern sie gleichzeitig für sich zu nutzen! Aus einem Minus ein Plus machen. Hier habe ich 5 Schritte für mehr Resilienz zusammengefasst:

1. Akzeptieren...

Leider ist der erste Punkt gleich mal der Allerschwierigste, finde ich zumindest. Bei beruflichen Angelegenheiten fällt es mir noch leichter, eine ungemütliche Situation zu akzeptieren, aber bei privaten Dingen: sehr schwierig. Dabei ist es doch wirklich logisch: Ärgern bringt nichts. Raubt uns nur unsere Nerven und Energie. Und vor allem: Wenn der Kopf mit Ärgern und Sorgen beschäftigt ist, kann er sich nicht auf einen Lösungsplan konzentrieren.

Monica Fiel sagt, auch superresiliente Menschen können nicht alles gleich positiv sehen. Aber „nach dem ersten Schreck sagen sie: ‚Es ist wie es ist.‘ Und: ‚Liegt da vielleicht eine Chance zur Veränderung?‘” Es geht also nicht so sehr darum, sich nie aufzuregen! Sondern es geht eher darum, die Zeit, die man mit Ärgern verbringt, möglichst kurz zu halten und die Situation dann so schnell wie möglich anzunehmen. Was mir da hilft, ist, dass ich versuche, Gott zu vertrauen und dann denke, dass alles seinen Sinn hat, auch wenn ich den jetzt noch nicht sehen kann.

2. Konzentrier dich auf die Lösung

(nicht das Problem)

Statt unsere Zeit also mit Ärgern oder -auch unproduktiv – der Suche nach Schuldigen zu verbringen, sollten wir uns lieber mit der Frage ablenken „Was kann ich tun?“ Eine praktische Übung, die Monica Fiel dazu empfiehlt, ist sich alles an der Situation, was man nicht beeinflussen kann in einen Kreis zu schreiben und dann alles, auf das man Einfluss hat, in einen anderen Kreis.

Vielleicht kommen wir nicht gleich auf DIE Lösung für unser Problem, aber solange wir Möglichkeiten suchen und finden, wie wir die Situation verbessern können, sind wir auf einem guten Weg. Und wir beschäftigen uns nicht mehr mit dem Problem („Alles läuft schief“), sondern mit der Lösung („Was kann ich tun, damit es besser läuft?“). Übrigens ist es am besten, das zu machen, bevor unsere Wut, Enttäuschung oder Sorgen die Chance hatten, sich total hochzusteigern.

3. Eigenlob

Die Coaches empfehlen, sich an Erfolgserlebnisse zu erinnern. Nach dem Motto: Ich habe schon so viel geschafft, dann schaffe ich auch das. Bei mir ist es so, dass ich mich generell eher an unschöne Erlebnisse erinnere, als an meine Erfolge. Da raten die Coaches, sich seine Erfolge am Ende des Tages kurz in ein Notizbuch zu schreiben. 

Nicht nur, dass es im Bedarfsfall Erinnerungsstütze ist: Wenn man sich diese Aufgabe stellt, achtet man jeden Tag viel mehr auf Erfolgsmomente, weil man ja abends was ins Heft schreiben will. Und wenn man mehr darauf achtet, fühlt man sich überhaupt erfolgreicher und zieht dann (deswegen) wiederum mehr Erfolge an und, und, und… (Kreislauf!)

4. Nach Hilfe fragen

Wir müssen nicht alles allein schaffen. „Resiliente Menschen wissen, wo ihre Grenzen sind und wo sie Hilfe brauchen“, hat mir Ursula Walther erklärt. Und sie fragen dann eben auch um Hilfe! Ich denke, Freunde und ein Netzwerk sind sooo wichtig, auch deswegen, weil man sich einfach stärker und besser fühlt, wenn man ein gutes Netz um sich herum hat. 

5. Gut auf sich aufpassen

„Wie soll ich Energie für Herausforderungen haben, wenn ich schlecht esse, mich nicht gut erhole und nicht genügend schlafe?“, sagt Ursula Walther im Interview. So logisch, aber wir vergessen das oft. Ein wenig Sport, Yoga, sich`s nett machen und all die Sachen, die wir gern machen – die tun uns nicht nur gut, sondern machen uns auch resilienter.

Das waren also die 5 Tipps für mehr Resilienz. Für mich war das Aufschreiben der Schritte für diesen Blog schon ganz hilfreich. Denn ich kenne diese Tage nur zu gut: Nichts läuft wie´s soll.  Ich weiß von meiner Zeit als Angestellte: man muss da manchmal schon was aushalten, vor allem wenn man schwierige Vorgesetzte hat. Aber als Freiberufler ist auch nicht alles easy-peasy: Weil ich zum Beispiel dauernd auf Leute zugehen muss, um an neue Aufträge zu kommen, höre ich viele „Neins“ (oder meistens bekomme ich auch einfach gar keine Antwort..) Also eigentlich gibt’s doch immer irgendwas, oder? 😉
