Location Scouting in West London
Where to go for family photos in Hammersmith, London?
West London has lovely views most of the time – but for a photographer’s eye, they are especially lovely in the late afternoon. When you combine historic and contemporary riverside architecture, peaceful walkways, and glowing evening light, you get one of the city’s finest backdrops for lifestyle, family, and portrait photography: Hammersmith Riverside.
Location Research at Hammersmith Riverside, London
I always make it a priority to research and scout photo locations on-site whenever possible before a shoot. Because I hadn’t shot at Hammersmith Riverside before, I visited twice in one week—first to scout key spots and light angles, and then again for the actual photo sessions. Taking that extra time paid off completely, because I could concentrate on the people and our conversations and didn’t have to look for nice photo spots at the same time. Multi-tasking has never been my thing, so preparation is important to me.
Why scout locations on-site?
Location scouting isn’t just about finding pretty backgrounds; it’s about understanding how a space changes throughout the day.
Tracking the Light:
The way golden hour hits the Thames changes fast. Scouting beforehand lets you map out exactly where the sun falls between buildings and bridge arches.
Foot Traffic:
Riverside paths draw runners, dog walkers, and evening commuters. Scouting helps identify quieter alcoves where clients feel relaxed and comfortable. It helps assess how busy it will probably be and calculate that into the shoot preparation.

Top Photography Spots at Hammersmith Riverside
If you are planning a photoshoot, portrait session, or brand story along the Thames in West London, here are a few standout locations around Hammersmith:
Hammersmith Bridge
The iconic green suspension bridge provides dramatic leading lines and structural elegance. It frames portraits beautifully, especially when shot from the lower embankment paths looking up as the background softens into warm evening light.
Riverside Walk
Walking west along the river, you’ll find both very romantic family-style backdrops as well as clean, elegant surfaces for more corporate portraits and headshots. Lovely pubs along the way make the area extra scenic.
The Hammersmith Riverside Studios
The Hammersmith Riverside Studios are especially great for classic and timeless portrait photography both for business and personal use. The glass offers great light reflections and a surface that doesn’t distract from the main subject.
The neighbourhood
Walking a little around the neighbourhood off the walkway, I discovered some amazing surfaces, colours, and light. I especially loved a huge orange door glowing in the evening light and the very neat, British, cozy-looking little houses and shopfronts here and there. Open spaces allowed for some great evening light.

However, commercial productions or setups requiring heavy equipment may require permission from the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.
