The Power of Powernapping

So far, my time management is still far from perfect. I often find myself prioritizing projects, ideas, and “just one more task” over getting the 8 hours of sleep I would actually need. I frequently have to remind myself how vital proper sleep is for cellular regeneration, immune function, and overall health. But when deadlines pile up, sleep is usually one of the things I will sacrifice.

The Afternoon Wall

I often hit that afternoon wall—sitting in front of the laptop, struggling to stay focused, and catching myself in those sudden micro-sleeps where your head nods off for a few seconds. In those moments, even I realize: there is zero point in trying to push through.

Luckily, I implemented a technique that actually works after an editorial photography assignment, where I had the pleasure of interviewing and photographing certified sleep expert Daniel Amann in Nürtingen near Stuttgart for a magazine feature.

Working on that lifestyle photography shoot wasn’t just fun visually—Daniel shared the actual science behind power napping.

The Power Nap Protocol

  • Set an Alarm: You must set a clock for under 20 minutes. If you sleep longer, you risk entering a deep sleep cycle, leaving you groggy, disoriented, and far more tired than before you closed your eyes.
  • Timing is Key: The ideal window is right after lunch, matching the natural dip in energy when your body shifts focus to digestion.
  • Use as an Emergency Tool: Daniel noted that our bodies thrive on a strict circadian rhythm—sleeping, waking, and eating at the exact same times every day. That level of daily consistency is an ideal I don’t even have the illusion of reaching right now, but managing a regular 8 hours of sleep would be doable in theory and fabulous. If you already get enough sleep at night, you shouldn’t nap because it can throw off your natural rhythm. But for sleep-deprived days, it’s a brilliant emergency measure.

The post-nap difference is immediate and tangible. After just 10 to 20 minutes, you wake up refreshed and ready to focus again. It won’t replace proper sleep hygiene, but on heavy workload days, it is the ultimate reset button.

How about you—are you a regular power napper, or are you one of those admirable people who actually stick to their sleep goals?
