Decide not to give up

eagles reutlingen

°•• Waited for a good spot in my Insta feed to place these images of the American Football players “Eagles Reutlingen”. Typed “sports quote” into Google for some caption and found such a good line: It not only goes for sportspeople but for anyone. Here is it: “ᴺᴱᵛᴱᴿ ᴳᴵᵛᴱ ᵁᴾ! ᶠᴬᴵᴸᵁᴿᴱ ᴬᴺᴰ ᴿᴱᴶᴱᶜᵀᴵᴼᴺ ᴬᴿᴱ ᴼᴺᴸᵞ ᵀᴴᴱ ᶠᴵᴿˢᵀ ˢᵀᴱᴾ ᵀᴼ ˢᵁᶜᶜᴱᴱᴰᴵᴺᴳ.” (- ᴶᴵᴹ ᵛᴬᴸᵛᴬᴺᴼ)

For me having decided ahead of time not to give up on “making it” as a photographer has been super valuable. I used to have doubts when being confronted with failure, and now I don’t. Because I have already decided that I won’t give up. And because I know it’s just normal to experience rejection or failure at times – it happens to anyone on the way to success. How else are we supposed to learn and become better? I’ve heard and read so often that having faith and refusing to give up is one of the major keys to success. I mean, otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many sayings and quotes of successful peops about the matter after all.

If you have set your heart on something – be it in sports, a career, or a personal goal – don’t allow yourself to become discouraged but decide ahead of time that you will keep going, keep believing, and that you will not give up! ☺️💛✌️ °•☆•

See this day

See this day

One of the most important reasons why I came up with the “A day in your life” project is, that I hope to encourage us (me included) to appreciate what we have and who we are today. This is so essential for living.

We’re often so busy making plans and hoping for a better future that we forget to have an attentive look at what is there right now. I often need to remind myself that true living is not planning and wishing. If we wait for “someday” or “tomorrow” instead of making the best out of what we have right now, we are going to miss our life – and our purpose.

Someday...

The church sermon on Sunday was just about that issue: don`t postpone what`s important and dance in the rain, that is make the best out of what`s there.

Here are some excerpts from pastor Amy Stotts’ sermon (www.stlukese16.co.uk) : “What if our whole lives weren`t based around “someday making it”? What would it mean that instead, we would LEARN to live free in joyful abundance today?

What if this “someday” we dreamt about became today? And instead of dreaming of a better tomorrow, we chose to stop wasting our days sleepwalking. Some of us are so focused on what might one day come true that we`re missing out today on God’s plans for today. Some of us are so busy building tomorrow, that we are forgetting about what God has called us to be now.”

“Life is not about waiting for storms to pass but learning to dance in the rain. Purpose is not waiting for the whole journey to be mapped out before taking the first step of faith but instead embracing the road we walk on today.”

Your camera as a tool for now

“What if our purpose wasn’t that destination that we hope one day to land on, but what if it was a way of inhabiting the world today? Maybe we just need to open our eyes and embrace what God has placed in front of us.”

My camera has been a good tool for me to help me focus on today. After all, cannot look at pictures of “somedays’” or “tomorrows’” happenings. Use whatever tool you like and truly see this day.

Sieh diesen Tag

See this day

Shine and go with the flow

Shine, and go with the flow

It`s my birthday tomorrow and I usually like to give myself a task for the new year ahead. This year, I want to truly challenge myself to “shine, and go with the flow”. I want to keep this in mind when things don`t go “my way”.

How do you react when people don`t act how you would like them to act and when situations don`t go as you would like them to go? Do you become grumpy and miserable and hurt yourself even more with your mood? Or do you surrender it all to God, accept, let go, trust and let God take over – do you do your best to have a smile on your face, give the unexpected situation an honest chance and go with the flow? If you belong to the ladder: I want to join your club!

Let God take over (and take pictures)

How often have I been in a situation like this and followed this same old, not very helpful pattern: I had plans and expectations, something or someone messes with my plans and I react with sulking, becoming grumpy and angry. And while becoming consumed with all these thoughts of self-pity and how wrong and unfair this all is, I entirely missed to give the new situation a fair chance and spoilt my own day. I have been missing a lot of good moments and pictures because of that.

If I have a friendly and shiny attitude, I can lift my own mood and I can connect with others. Even if things don`t go my way, there`ll always be something to see and photograph – if I stay open in order to see it.

"It pays off to dream big!"

In Conversation with the girls of "herzstärkend"

„Herzstärkend“ (meaning „strengthening for the heart“) is the side-hustle project of the five girls Mira, Fini, Hannah, Lea und Luka. They are writing about God on Instagram, they also teach hand lettering, and they keep coming up with new creative products for their online shop.

Meanwhile, they even do fashion: Their sweatshirts are sustainably produced in a factory in India that supports women who are freed from forced prostitution. Just days ago, “herzstärkend” has celebrated its fourth anniversary.

The journey began with Mira, who started the Instagram Account “herzstärkend”. Her first edition of notebooks went so well, that she took on some help for the project: her sister Luka as well as her friends Hannah, Lea, and Fini. Ever since “herzstärkend” is growing steadily. Even though the team has a long-distance relationship: Lea and Fini are living in Würzburg – around 100 miles apart from Mara, Luka, and Hannah in the area around Stuttgart.

Lovelies, Congratulations to the four-year anniversary of “herzstärkend”! When you started the project, did you envision it as it is today?

Mira: When I went abroad for a couple of months, I wasn`t able to manage the project on my own anymore. So I wondered: Who could help with which task? Why not give it a try as a team, I thought… We then were five girls, everyone threw in ideas, and all of a sudden there was so much manpower! Within half a year, „herzstärkend“ basically exploded! After three months, we couldn`t even imagine the project without the five of us.

Hannah: And we only ever met as a team about half a year into the joint work on the project. Before, we just spoke via Skype. We all had been friends with Mira, but Lea and Fini were her friends from Würzburg and Luka and I only got to know them due to “herzstärkend”.

Luka: We had never planned to found a company. It just happened because we received so many orders.

I would imagine it quite challenging to lead a business as friends. Especially when it comes to maintaining a close friendship with an open heart for each other. In business one has to take criticism after all… How are your experiences regarding conflicts in the group?

Hannah: Actually, everyone has advised us against it! But I don`t regret it one minute!

Lea: Sure it`s challenging! “Herzstärkend” is growing and more people are getting involved. But we are growing with challenges and therefore we can master the following ones with more ease. I have been profiting big time from our friendship. Each one of us is different, yet we have so much appreciation for each other.

Mira: We all are team players, and we can all be quiet and listen. No one is stubborn and everyone is willing to take a step back now and then and put the team first. That`s important, to be able to retreat. For example, if Lea had the idea for a product, then I don`t necessarily need to get my way when it comes to a decision about this product, but I can put her first instead.

Fini: We don`t make decisions by vote. That just doesn`t work well in a friendship. We need to find a compromise that is satisfying for everybody. Everybody needs to be in favour of the decision.

Lea: When there haven`t been in-person team days in a long while, then I often lack energy for our project. Once we have seen each other again in person, it`s like an energy boost. On Monday mornings we regularly meet online to chat and pray. When the first lockdown started, we used to meet online at seven each morning to pray together.

Luka: And on Thursdays is our Jour Fix for talking about all things business.

Alongside „herzstärkend“ you all are also studying. How do you get on in terms of time management and organisation? Do you have strategies, or has that never been an issue?

Fini: So, I don`t have a strategy and am handling things with quite some flexibility.

Mira: Uni is my priority and therefore I start the day doing stuff for uni. If there`s still time after that, then I would work on something for „herzstärkend“.

Hannah: For me, „herzstärkend“ is like recreation. That`s the advantage as a business owner: you can determine when to do what. There is a lot of freedom. When my studies are stressing me out, I work on something for “herzstärkend“ and think: Working can be so nice!

Lea: We do try to set deadlines though. However, with a bit more structure, things might run even better. I would be interested, what would be possible, if it was our full-time job. At the same time, it`s nice to have no pressure. Not being obliged to do anything for profit. “Herzstärkend“ is both our hobby and work.

Hannah: Of course, there are times, for example when we have a lot of exams, when we reduce the amount of work for „herzstärkend“.

Mira: At times I do think, it`s all becoming too much and I don`t manage – as well with our different targets and ideas in some areas. That can be challenging and then it`s good to allow some distance, do something entirely different, like spending time with my boyfriend.

What are your most important learning experiences with “herzstärkend” so far?

Lea: It pays off to dream big! I would never have thought that we would get that far with “herzstärkend”. For example, when we had the option to have sweatshirts produced. We asked ourselves: Shall we do fashion? – Hey, why not? And now it`s a great project!

Luka: We have learned a lot about leading a business – tax, finance plan, … And we learned what fair fashion really means: not just the fabric must be sustainably produced, but as well the zip. For a scrunchie, you need a sustainably produced elastic band. As well the transport routes must be convenient for our production site in Mumbai.

Fini: I loved the experience that you can teach yourself anything. You can always ask. You can always reach out and connect with people who know how it`s done. This way a lot is achievable.

Mira: Compared to being on your own, there is so much more possible with a team. Initially, I didn`t find it easy to let go and share my „baby“, my project „herzstärkend“ with others. But now I would do that with every project I start: Work with a team.

"It pays off to dream big! I would never have thought that we would get that far with “herzstärkend”. "

What are your plans for the next four years with „herzstärkend“? Do you have a plan at all, or do you just take things as they come?

Lea: We don`t have detailed plans – we already struggle to plan what`s gonna be in six months’ time.

Hannah: Our products, our content, and who we are, that`s all changing and evolving. Anyway, we don`t aim at making a living with „herzstärkend“.

Fini: Yes, „herzstärkend“ has to run alongside our actual jobs.

Mira:  We mainly want to stay good friends no matter what. That`s most important!

Should-Do`s

Appointments for the Should Do`s - do all things with love photogaphed by Nadine Wilmanns

Appointments for the Should-Do`s

Appointments for the Should-Do`s

Do you have a lot of „Should Do´s” in your head? I have, and I need to get rid of them. Not only do they make me feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious and moody. But they also rob my energy, my joy and they make me less or even non-productive. Plus they suffocate any creativity.

“Do all things with love”, advises the Bible (in 1 Corinthians 16,14, in case you wanna look it up). But how can I do things with love when feeling stressed and overwhelmed?

When I constantly think I should do this and that, I cannot concentrate on what I`m doing at the moment, let alone enjoy. And often when there are too many Should Do`s floating in my head, I get literally paralyzed and don`t get anything done at all. Thus, Should Do`s are not serving me at all.

Time Management

As a freelancer this has been one of my biggest challenges. When I was an employee, I used to go to work, knowing I am meant to be there, peacefully doing my stuff, knowing what I had to do – haaappy days. As a creative freelancer, time management and Should Do`s have become less straightforward and more of an issue. So I need to come up with a system. There`s a LinkedIn Learning Course on Time Management by Dave Crenshaw and I`m gonna implement some of his advice in my system.

Appointments for peace of mind

So here`s my plan how to get rid of the Should Do`s: I gather them all in one To-Do list, and once a day, I give them appointments in my calendar. Or I give them an appointment straight away. This way they are kind of “done”, out of my head and in my calendar.

For example, I really should take my passport picture. I keep having that on my mind for days, even weeks now – have I done it? No. Because it was just a Should Do in my head, along with 20 other Should Do`s, and not an appointment in my calendar. Now, it`s scheduled for tomorrow at 4pm.

I`ll keep you updated with my findings about how to have more peace of mind as a creative freelancer. Meanwhile, I would be happy to hear or read about your insights. How are you managing your “Should do`s” and your time? Do you have a system in place and do you take control?

Update: Double the estimated time for a task

Only after 2 days, I have noticed: when I think something will take me one hour, it will usually take me two. So I need to schedule double the time of what I would estimate for any task. Otherwise, I end up in a hurry and stress – and the whole point of planning is to get rid of stress.

Update: Be open to reschedule when needed

Life happens, and sometimes you need an extra pause because an event has thrown you off your path. We are humans and not machines. While we generally should commit to our schedule (otherwise it won`t be much help), we still can ask ourselves: What would serve me now in this situation? What would do me good? Maybe it`s smarter to reschedule something to free space for a much-needed walk or a bit of just hanging about. Be open to reschedule when life throws unexpected challenges at you. The goal of making appointments for your “Should-Do`s” is peace of mind. Not just working things off like a robot not listening to your needs in a given situation.

Update: Maybe-List

If there are simply too many Should-Do`s that need to be scheduled so they just don`t fit in our calendar, we need to radically prioritize. What is truly important, meaning what will still matter in years? What is so urgent that it has to be done in order to avoid serious consequences? These things are to be scheduled in the calendar. Everything that is not so important goes to the “Maybe-List”. This way, they are still recorded and out of our heads. But we don`t NEED to do them anytime soon (or ever).

Update: Post-it-Technique

If I`ve got a lot of tasks that I could do “anytime”, I often find it hard to give them a fixed appointment. It has then helped me to write those Should-Do`s on a post-it each. Then I pin or stick them on a wall, table, cardboard, or styrofoam board and set myself a deadline. I divide the number of tasks by the number of workdays until my deadline. So if I got two weeks for 17 tasks, I would wanna divide those 17 tasks by the ten workdays, that`s 1,7. That means, I wanna bin two tasks a day, and it`s not an issue if I only bin one on a few days. However, when working with the post-it-technique, I do need to leave some leeway in my calendar though, and I need to be very mindful to not be “overbooked”.

Downtime

Termine für die Should-Do`s

Hast du viele “Should Do`s” im Kopf? Also schwirren viele Sachen in deinem Kopf herum, die du eigentlich dringend erledigen solltest?

Also helfen mir Should Do`s überhaupt null.

Zeit-Management

Nein.

Story of Pink

“Where have you been?”

“Places…”

Short as always. Some things don`t seem to change. He`s looking very handsome but very tired.  Why do I never seem to know what to say, she thinks. Only later, when the moment is gone, of course.

“It wasn`t until I looked at the litter on the ground when I just started to notice all the pink blossoms everywhere…”, she says eventually.

“Oh yeah, right…”

“You know, things might not look too great at the moment but I`m sure everything will work out fine eventually because God has got a good plan for you. In fact, some things that seem to be crap now might turn out to be a blessing later. Just don`t lose hope.” So, that`s said, she thinks somewhat relieved. The light is very pretty because the sun is about to set, and people look happy because it`s still weekend.

“What`s hope anyway?” he asks.

“Expecting something good around any corner.”

He gets up and walks away.  She doesn`t look after him but closes her eyes. Breathe in, breathe out. Don`t cry.

Moments later, she feels his arm around her shoulder. “You`re right – there are pink blossoms wherever you set your foot”, he says. “And yet, I haven`t even noticed them until you just pointed them out. I can`t wait to see a good plan unfolding. And I still have a tenner in my pocket so we might as well get us a coffee while we wait.” She is smiling now. This might just be the best idea for today.
