Passing the Passion for Photography
Photographer Steffen Burgemeister, Pfullingen
When we trace back our roots, it’s fascinating to see how a passion for photography can weave its way through generations. Have you ever found that our creative urges are a beautiful inheritance from those who came before us?
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Steffen Burgemeister in his photography studio. Steffen is a master photographer who took over his father’s historic photo studio in Pfullingen, South Germany. He stepped into photography back when images were still captured on analog film and carefully brought to life in chemical darkrooms.
The traces of a four-generation photographer legacy
But Steffen’s story goes much deeper than just taking over a family business. He represents the fourth generation of photographers in his family—a legacy that traces all the way back to his great-grandfather.
Walking into his studio feels like stepping into a living time capsule. The space is filled with beautiful, tangible traces of heritage, dedication, and time.
A family`s view of the world
There is something very special about a passion for photography that travels through a family like that. It is a shared language passed down from heart to heart, from eye to eye. It’s the unique way a family learns to look at the world and say, “Slow down now, this moment in time matters.”
In fact, I can see these traces of heritage and time in my own family, too.
The creative urge in family history
I have far more childhood photos of myself than most people thanks to my dad, who had his Leica on him on any suitable occasion. And I know of his dad—my grandfather, whom I never met—that he was the same. Like me, he didn’t just love photography; he also loved to document, sketch, and paint.
Whenever he traveled, he didn’t just observe—he painted. He had that exact same inner urge that I feel today: the irresistible need to capture, preserve, and document time and places.
We don’t just inherit eye color or gestures; we inherit the way we seek beauty in the world.
