Words and Photography by Nadine Wilmanns

Time Traveller

Do you know the film About Time? It`s about time travellers – father and son – who can travel back in time. The film is beautifully shot, which is the main reason why I watched it. As a photographer, I am drawn to films that inspire me visually, and this one certainly did. Being a photographer and videographer who captures moments also brings an acute awareness of time passing. In general, I`ve always been interested in the phenomenon of time. The core message of the film comes through in a quote the hero of the story (the son with time-travelling abilities) says at the very end of the film:

“The truth is I now don’t travel back at all, not even for the day. I just try to live every day as if I’ve deliberately come back to this one day, to enjoy it, as if it was the full final day of my extraordinary, ordinary life.”

The real question for all of us is:

Do I live today as if I had chosen to return to it tomorrow?

Do I receive this day as something precious and therefore live it intentionally?

Of course, life is busy. There is always more to do, more to accomplish, and more that other people ask of us. And the reality is: this will not stop in the foreseeable future. At the same time, much of life is routine and not concerts and beach holidays and dinner dates. This will also always be true in the months to come, as it has been in the years that have passed.

Routine attention

Much of life is made up not of grand moments, but of routines: meetings, conversations, meals, errands, and evenings in front of the laptop. But life is not about accumulating extraordinary adventures anyway (even though I do want more and more of them). God says: “ Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.” (Colossians 3:17) And: “Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Looking back, it`s not necessarily the extraordinary things that made me joyful. More often, it is the days when I was grateful, when I felt useful while at the same time, I was able to really see, hear, taste, and notice what`s going on around me. What about you?
