How to dress for photos

How to dress is one of the most frequent questions my clients ask me when we plan our photo session. For a start, I always advise them to bring along two or three outfits. This way we get a bigger variety in the imagery but also, we have different options to choose from. In this blog post, I wanna share some ideas from my own experience as a photographer about how to dress for a photo session in order to look to your best advantage.
First choice: comfortable
It`s hard to relax and feel good in a pullover that makes you itch. Or in shoes that are hurting your toes, in jeans that cut into your stomach, … Choose clothes that are comfy and that allow you to move freely.
Also, it`s not easy to really be yourself and shine if you wear clothes that make you feel self-conscious and insecure. The feeling is most important when it comes to dressing for a photo session! When choosing your outfits, double-check whether these clothes are making you feel truly confident and comfortable.
Choose harmony
If you are a bunch of people wanting to be photographed together, it would be great if you coordinated with each other what to wear. Ideally, the colours of the clothes of the entire group would be in harmony. And either all in rather light colours, or all rather dark.
Say no to logos
If you want to get timeless images that you will still love 10 years down the road, you best avoid visible, big logos on your clothes. Not only can they be a distraction in the image. But also you might not like these brands anymore sometime soon. For example, when I was in my early twenties, I had a phase when I liked to show off certain brands – thinking about it now makes me cringe.
Blazers are your friends
A blazer tends to be the most flattering item to wear. Blazers are fitted and generally make for a good shape. Just make sure that your blazer is the right fit and not too tight around your upper arms and across your back: if you see that the fabric throws creases that means it`s too tight. Unbuttoned tailored jackets and well-fitting coats are great for every shape, too.
Say yes to sleeves
It`s a good idea to bring at least one top with sleeves to the photo session. For girls, wide flared butterfly sleeves that end somewhere between mid upper arm and elbow are the most flattering. Men wearing long sleeves look extra cool if they tuck the sleeves up towards the elbows a little.
Know the effect of oversized
Oversized pullovers, sweaters, and jackets are so fashionable, and I love wearing them. However, it`s good to know that they can make curvy people look bigger in photos than they really are. In case this is a concern for you, choose tops that are neither tight nor baggy or oversized, but just slightly loose. Also, the sleeve seam should preferably sit on your shoulder, not somewhere half down your arm. Most flattering are tailored tops like blouses, blazers, shirts, or jackets in the right fit.

Was soll ich anziehen, ist eine der meistgestellten Fragen meiner Kunden, wenn wir unsere Foto Session planen. Zum einen empfehle ich immer zwei oder drei Outfits mitzubringen. So haben wir eine größere Vielfalt in den Bildern und außerdem mehrere Optionen. In diesem Blogpost will ich ein paar Ideen aufschreiben, wie man sich für Fotos anzieht, um möglichst vorteilhaft darauf auszusehen.
Erste Wahl: bequem
Es ist schwer, sich zu entspannen und sich gut zu fühlen, wenn man einen kratzigen Pulli anhat, Schuhe, die den Zehen wehtun oder Jeans die am Bund einschneiden. Wähle Kleider aus, die sich gut und bequem anfühlen und in denen du dich frei bewegen kannst.
Außerdem ist es nicht leicht, ganz du selbst zu sein und zu strahlen, wenn du Kleider trägst, die dich unsicher und gehemmt fühlen lassen. Das Gefühl ist das wichtigste, wenn es darum geht, sich für eine Foto Session anzuziehen! Wenn du dein Outfit auswählst, checke ob diese Klamotten dich wirklich selbstbewusst und gleichzeitig entspannt fühlen lassen.
Wähle Harmonie
Wenn ihr eine Gruppe Leute seid, die zusammen fotografiert werden wollen, wäre es super, wenn ihr aufeinander abstimmen würdet, was ihr tragt. Idealerweise passen die Farben der Kleider der ganzen Gruppe harmonisch zusammen und alle tragen entweder eher helle oder eher dunkle Farben.
Sag nein zu Markenlogos
Wenn du gerne zeitlose Bilder haben möchtest, die du auch in zehn Jahren noch mögen wirst, dann vermeide am besten sichtbare, große Logos auf deinen Kleidern. Die können auf den Bildern nicht nur irritierend wirken, sondern es kann auch sein, dass du diese Marken bald gar nicht mehr magst. Als ich zum Beispiel Anfang zwanzig war, hatte ich eine Phase, in der ich gerne bestimmte Marken zu Schau getragen habe – heute mag ich das gar nicht mehr.
Sag ja zu Ärmeln
Es ist eine gute Idee, zumindest ein Oberteil mit Ärmeln zur Foto Session zu bringen. Sehr vorteilhaft an Mädels sind weit ausgestellte flatternde Flügelärmel, die irgendwo zwischen Mitte Oberarm und Ellenbogen enden. Männer mit langärmeligem Oberteil sehen besonders cool aus, wenn sie die Ärmel lässig hochschoppen.
Blazer sind deine Freunde
Blazer sind super vorteilhaft: sie sind antailliert und machen eine gute Figur. Achte nur darauf, dass dein Blazer die richtige Größe hat und nicht zu eng an Oberarmen oder Rücken ist. Wenn du siehst, dass der Stoff in den Bereichen Falten schlägt, dann heißt das, der Blazer ist zu eng. Offen getragene, figurbetonte Jacken und schmale Mäntel sind auch schön für jede Figur.
Kenne den Oversized-Effekt
Oversized Oberteile sind sehr in und ich liebe es, sie zu tragen. Allerdings ist es gut zu wissen, dass sie Leute mit Kurven auf Fotos breiter erscheinen lassen, als sie in Wirklichkeit sind. Falls dich das stört, zieh lieber Tops an, die weder enganliegend noch superweit sind, sondern einfach etwas locker sitzen. Außerdem sollte die Ärmelnaht am besten auf der Schulter sitzen und nicht auf deinem Oberarm. Am vorteilhaftesten sind körperbetonte, aber nicht zu enge Oberteile wie Blusen, Blazer, Hemden oder schmal geschnittene Jacken in der richtigen Größe.
