Photographs and time

It is all there now

“Look, last week this tree was pink and now it`s basically green”, said Annie and took a sip from the hospital coffee she brought for her and her sister to the park. “Hmm”, Emily looked up. “You know, I was so busy working on this book project that I haven`t even noticed Kevin looking sickly”, she said. “I certainly haven`t noticed the state of this tree.”

She felt the familiar sting of guilt in her stomach. “Look at me, Emily”, her sister urged her. “Our brother is gonna be fine, the doctor said so – so stop beating yourself up about it.”

“I know. It`s just that I hardly took the time to chat with him for longer than five minutes in the last few weeks. I kept thinking: once I`ve finished renovating the house, we can go on that trip to the seaside.  And then the opportunity with the book came along and I thought once I`ve finished the book project…”

“Well, how is it going? Are you making progress?”

“Some days more, and some days feel like I want to throw it all into the bin… I`m not sure if I can even finish it now.”

“You will, Emily, I`m certain of it. But you need to notice the colours of trees and stuff in order to enjoy the process if you know what I mean. Kevin will be as good as new in a couple of weeks and we can take that trip together. You might need to ask for a later deadline, but honestly: Would that be that bad?”

Emily took a deep breath. It would probably not be much of a problem to move her deadline. She grabbed her phone and took a photo of the branches full off green and bits of pink above her head. “Thanks”, she said to her sister. “I will remember that.” Kevin would be ok and her book would be finished a little late. Today, she wouldn`t waste on sleepwalking being busy. She would taste that coffee properly, she would spend time reading stories to her brother,  she would fetch some flowers on the way home. The summer is going to be hers.

Time today

How often do we think things like: once I have worked off my current workload I will take time for myself, once I`m slim I will be able to enjoy myself, once I`ve got holidays I will spend more time with my family;… Once xyz happens I will do what I actually wish to do. How often have we carelessly allowed time to slip through our hands this way? Waiting for a better tomorrow instead of making an effort to see what is there now… I know for myself: too often.

Have a relaxed look around you and take a deep breath. IT IS ALL THERE NOW ALREADY! This is what I want my pictures to be about: Make myself and whoever looks at them appreciate what is there today. Even though it`s not perfect, it may be even far from it. But our most valuable asset in life is time, now.

One good day at a time

I love what Max Lucado writes in his book “Live loved”:

“Rejoice IN this day? God invites us to. As Paul rejoiced IN prison; David wrote psalms IN the wilderness; (…) Imagine the difference (…) Suppose neck-deep in a terrible … day you resolve to give it a chance. (…) You trust more. Stress less. Amplify gratitude. Mute grumbling. (…) Before long the day is done and it went surprisingly decent. So decent, in fact, that you resolve to give the next day the same fighting chance. (…) Days become a week. Weeks become months. (…) In such a fashion good lives are built. One good day at a time.”

Photographs and Time

Having a habit of thinking ‘Once xyz happens I will do what I want to do’ can be dangerous, because we might actually miss our own life. Photographs are the best reminders of this fact that I can think of. They remind us of the preciousness of time and of each day. When I look at my photographs – be it of a day in my twenties or of last week – I instantly become more aware of everything that`s around me now. And more grateful for what is here already.

Life can be tough but please let`s not hustle away our lives without noticing how the trees change from pink to green, the new smell in the air when summer is approaching, noticing how the light starts to fade later and later, and the subtle goodbye of this spring.

Ich liebe was Max Lucado in seinem Buch “Live loved” schreibt:
